Red Wedding Gowns - Yay or Nay?

Jun 9, 2010 Wedding Planning Institute

Ever so often you’ll find yourself face to face with a bride who wants to push the envelope. We’re not talking cupcakes at the reception or guys in her bridal party - we’re talking fashion. There is a growing number of brides who want to skip the Victorian white gown and instead summon their inner Scarlett O’Hara and opt for a red one. Or blue. Or baby pink. We’ve seen them all, and the right bride can pull it off, but it does take some confidence and finesse.

If you have a fall 2010 bride who is up on the trends and wants to make a splash at her ceremony a colored gown may be the perfect suggestion. A lot of top wedding-gown designers have actually shown dresses recently that have no white in them. Zilch. Nada. Consider the following:

In our opinion a bride should wear whatever she wants. It’s her day, afterall, and we’d venture to guess that a bride who wants to wear red - or purple or black - has friends and family who expect nothing less. And if she decides she wants to wear white? Well, that’s what vow renewals are for, right? And her certified wedding and event planner will be there to guide her along her second time, too.

I have to say that I would personally never find myself down the aisle in anything other than the traditional wihite wedding gown, but a lot can be said for a bride that has the spunk and the charisma to pull something like that off. And it will definitely be talked about for years to come. As a wedding planner, I would like to encourage ideas like these from the bride. What a nice break from the traditional norm!

I feel that tradition is always fit for some people; however, as Julie mentioned it takes something special for Brides to take a chance and try a colored gown. Brides should wear whatever they want, whether it is white, red, pink, yellow, or even black. The gown is simply another signature of the Bride and her personality.

One of my favorite parts of a wedding is the brides white gown. I am not even a fan of the off white or cream colored gowns. It is not just about tradition, but the fact that it does represent a clean and new, fresh start for the bride and her new husband. Not to mention that it creates a great contrast for photos, with the brides white dress against all of the bright colors of her bridesmaids and guests. To me it wouldn’t seem like a real wedding dress unless it was solid white. Colored dresses would seem more like a prom dress then a wedding dress. If a bride wants to add color to her appearance, that is what accessories are for. A colorful ribbon, or hair piece, or even shoes is a great way to add color or carry the color theme of the entire wedding into the brides outfit without straying from the traditional white dress.

I love that a bride can pick from new styles. We have all been to hundreds of weddings were the bride is wearing the same strapless satin gown and we tell them all they look beautiful -and they do- but how great for the doors to open or for a bride to come out and pow bright red or pink or yellow dress - hallelujah here she comes. Gasps would be great because any bride taking a chance is looking to shock and ahh her guests. Love it!

the wedding gown is the most important thing in a wedding to me since its the one thing that will stay with you forever other than your husband. therefore, traditional white wedding gowns are wonderful, but why not go out of the usual and wear a different color dress other than white. With so many colors to choose from its not a bad idea to get a dress matching the color theme in a wedding. That can truly make a wedding unique and memorable not only for the bride and groom but for their guests as well.
