Trends

Apr 9, 2012 Wedding Planning Institute

A special event is the coordination of multiple industries wrapped in a beautiful package that unfolds over a specific period of time and for a specific purpose, such as a celebration. The special event industry infuses the most popular trends from respected industries that influence the overall event experience from food to fashion.

In our industry, we strive to highlight the latest and greatest each related industry has to offer in order to achieve the most memorable, successful outcome for our clients. As event planners and designers we have an arsenal of ideas at our fingertips to not only embrace new trends, but to set new ones for our industry and others.

Identifying trends in special event planning and design can be as simple as perusing the numerous websites, blogs, mood boards, inspirational apps and photo galleries available today. Being a trendsetter is an altogether different approach toward being a true thought leader in our industry. The hallmark of a trendsetter is being the first to inspire others to do great things in the design, planning, production and implementation of an event.

These individuals are also the risk takers and artists of our time, leading the rest of us to further evolve the trends we’ve been inspired to embrace. Popular ideas have a way of moving from one related industry to another. For instance, music inspires fashion, fashion inspires design, and design overflows into our work, homes and events.

Inspiration is what allows a new trend to flourish. Inspiration can be found anywhere. From the smallest details to grand and monumental architecture, we can find our inspiration at any time and often when we least expect it. As a professional in the industry, it is important to develop your ability to capture your own inspirations. This will prepare you for working with clients to understand their vision, where it originated, and what inspired it.

Begin by practicing finding and capturing your own inspiration. The first step to recognizing and harnessing the ability to create new and innovative ideas in our industry is knowing how to recognize when you’ve been inspired.

What inspires you?

Is it a place? A vacation? What colors speak to you? How do those colors make you feel? Are there certain fabrics you love to wrap yourself in? Why? What type of art work do you enjoy? Who are your favorite designers in fashion? In architecture? In furniture? What is the style of your home? Your wardrobe? Your landscape?

You will find that you have already developed your sense of style that inspires you even if you haven’t tried. Most of us have a favorite color by the time we are able to speak.

Set a new trend and begin your next project by finding inspiration.
• Create an inspiration board or collection of things that make you feel good or inspire you.
• Search the Internet for images, fonts, designs, logos, fashion, shoes, objects, etc.
• Visit a museum, art gallery, charity store or antique shop.
• Watch a movie, read a book, listen to music.

I’ve seen quite a few weddings so far this year that have utilized very bright colors - a hot-pink-and-lime-green is one that I’m working on right now, and I have a bright blue and a brilliant yellow coming up as well. In addition to bright colors, it seems like people are more into big, bold patterns such as stripes and polka dots. I did a black-and-white polka dotted wedding last year and it was exquisite!

For me, inspiration stems from what I hear. Music has had a major impact upon my designing and planning abilities. Often, in those first few meetings with a bride, I will ask her to pick a song that makes her feel the way she wants to feel at her wedding. Then I’ll keep that song in her files and if I start to lose track of her dream, I’ll listen to it and it will renew the ideas I had for her special day. It’s a unique approach, but it has garnered fantastic results so far!

I like to surprise the guests… the last 5 or so minutes of the ceremony (usually during the unity selection) I make my way to the middle of the aisle, behind the guests. The bride & groom face the guests so everyone can see their expressions right before they are pronounced H & W and kiss. Everyone with a camera (and who doesn’t have one?) can get a “cake topper” photo to take home with them. It’s a small thing, but it has been received very well by couples.

I have been very inspired by the wedding and events section of Pinterest. I love all the different ideas and the variety posted on the site. I began searching pinterest for fashion ideas but then stumbled upon the wedding section. There are so many different themed ideas, colors, and ideas for all different aspects of the wedding from engagement, ceremony, and reception.

You can plan any themed wedding with the ideas in the wedding section of pinterest. The best part of this site is that pins are updated every few mintues so you can always get fresh ideas each time you visit the site.

Although trends do tend to change every season, I love to still have a signature to each event of mine. Surprising Guests is something in the past that I have done. I also like to have themes for events and parties so that the guests also get invoved in it.
I get my inspiration from everywhere. We just have to keep our eyes open everytime. I also like to record stuff that I like or dislike so that I can refer to it anytime.

I love organizing theme events and incorporating the personalities of my bride and groom from start to finish, since each bride and groom are unique their signature wedding is also unique. I have always been inspired by nature and natural elements: Themes like Forest, Peacock, Cultural themes have always played a major role in my signature wedding ideas. I also love involving amazing entertainment and incorporating the theme elements into their performances as well.
