Questions That Wedding Planners Should Expect

Oct 19, 2011 Wedding Planning Institute

When it comes to interviewing possible bridal clients there is one thing every certified wedding and event planner must be: prepared. Being prepared means being on top of new and exciting wedding trends, and it means that planners must anticipate the questions brides-to-be are going to ask. Here are some of those questions; how would you answer them?

. How long have you been a planner?
. Are you a certified wedding and event planner?
. Is this your full-time job?
. How much do you charge?
. How many weddings have you planned?
. How many clients do you take on at one time?
. What is the largest wedding or event you have planned?
. Will you be at the wedding?
. Are you willing to travel to another region on the day of our wedding?
. Do you bring a staff with you?
. What are the best venues that fit our budget?
. (Once they choose a venue) Have you worked with this venue before?
. Can you help us with venue contracts?
. Can you get us discounts with vendors?
. Are you willing to stick to our budget and not guide us in a direction we can’t afford?
. How, and how often, may we contact you?
. Do you also plan honeymoons?

Suffice to say - brides are likely to add numerous questions to this list, but these are some common ones that every planner should expect to answer, and answer well. Remember that brides want to feel comfortable and feel heard. They’re likely going into this interview with a very specific vision in mind, and although your ideas may enhance their dreams - they’re still the clients’ dreams!

It’s important to remember, also, that although you’re the one being interviewed it’s a good time for you to get to know potential clients and try to figure out if you will work well with them. Trying to figure out how to say no? Read this great column by LWPI instructor Amanda Allen of MMD Events in Tampa, Florida: Insight from the Wedding Planning Institute: Saying No. To do a great job and end the day with a satisfied client you have to make sure your personalities mesh well!

What other important questions would you add to this list?

Eco-Friendly Weddings: Why Should You Become a Green Wedding Planner?

Jul 25, 2011 Wedding Planning Institute

What are your plans for your wedding- and event-planning business? Are you hoping to be known for your upscale style? Or do you want potential clients to look to you for environmental knowledge? If that’s the case LWPI’s Green Wedding Planning course is for you. One recent LWPI graduate, Sharnice Thompson, shares with us why she chose the course and what she got out of it. Will you be the next certified Green Wedding Planner in your region?

Why did you choose LWPI? I did my research and found that LWPI met the criteria that I was looking for, and the institute as a whole is very sophisticated. The staff is knowledgeable about the school and programs, and this is the only institute that offers an eco-friendly wedding-planing certificate course.

What made you decide to be a Green Wedding Planner? My husband and I are very much into the “green” lifestyle, and when I decided I wanted to be a wedding planner I knew that I wanted to be a little different and make a big impact. Therefore, I choose to go with green wedding planning, something among the path I’m already on and am very much familiar with.

What did you like most about the course? I like that it’s at-your-own-pace. I was able to balance my cake business, school, work and the course at the same time.

How did the course prepare you to work in the event industry? It helped me become organized, and it guided me in the direction of a successful wedding planner.

Do you think Green Weddings will grow more popular? With the direction that the world is going I know that Green Weddings will absolutely grow in popularity in the years to come.

Why should a bridal couple try to plan a Green Wedding? Wedding couples should try Green Wedding Planning to see the bigger picture: their commitment to one another; their commitment to their community and the world; and their commitment to lessening their carbon footprint as a couple. It can also be the beginning of a green life together, and it may help them save money.

What are your favorite eco-friendly trends? I love eco-friendly clothes, jewelry and makeup. People are always trying to enhance their appearance, and if they use green materials it makes a large impact on our world.

What trends do you predict will grow in popularity and become more mainstream for non-green weddings? Gowns: They will be heirlooms, recycled, made from recycled materials and/or donated.

Do you have a background in event planning? I do not have any previous background in event planning, but I do plan to continue to grow my business to a full-time job.

Do you have anything else to share with aspiring Green Wedding Planners? Reach for your “green” goals, and be sure you’re making your clients aware of how they can reduce their carbon footprint.

You can find Sharnice through her business website, Haute Chic Cakes and More. Be sure to click on the Eco-Chic Wedding Tab for wedding and package information. To reach her, visit the Contact Page, where you will find her name, number and her email address.

Chatting With the First Preston Bailey Intern From LWPI

Lovegevity’s Wedding Planning Institute is devoted to helping its graduates get off on the right foot, which for many students means internships. Graduates of Preston Bailey’s Signature Wedding and Event Design course have the opportunity to intern with him, following a rigorous application process that highlights the best of the best. Preston recently chose his first intern from among his graduates, Tara Martin-Crawford, 28, of Kingston, N.Y. Tara currently works as a dental assistant but will begin interning under Preston starting in June. For three months she will continue the fantastic education she started within his course, and she will get unparalleled, hands-on experience creating some of the most fantastic events in the business. We recently talked with Tara about why she chose to study with LWPI and what she’s looking forward to in her internship.

Why did you choose LWPI? “I chose LWPI because their website was very detailed, professional, and the courses that they offer cover many aspects of event planning and design. I just didn’t have as much confidence in other courses that I looked into as I did with LWPI’s. I was confident that the skills I would be taught would be inline with industry standards and provide me with a solid foundation for starting a career in the event industry.”

Did you know who Preston Bailey was prior to finding LWPI? “Prior to taking his course I was aware of who Mr. Bailey is … a renowned industry leader. Therefore, when I saw that he would be teaching a course through LWPI I knew that I wanted to be first in line to sign up for it.”

Do you have any advice for students currently enrolled in Preston’s course? “Dream big, be as creative as possible, and don’t overlook the small details of the events you design. For me the course was very time-consuming. I had to put hours and hours of work into each assignment and at times I felt a little overwhelmed. The course definitely gave me a real appreciation for what goes into designing a big event.”

What was your favorite part of the course? “My favorite part of Mr. Bailey’s course was assignment 3.1, in which I had to create three different design concepts that would be presented to a client. It allowed me to explore different ways of creating an event based on one central theme. This helped me expand my creativity and made me think about how design elements can be combined to change the mood and atmosphere of an event.”

What did you find most challenging about the course? “Preparing the vendor list and itemized price of producing the event were the most challenging for me. My dream event ended up costing almost $1 million to produce so there were a lot of vendors that I had to contact and some of the design elements were pretty complicated to get quotes for. I spent a lot of time communicating with people via phone and email, and it took a great deal of effort to stay organized with all the quotes. It was definitely a challenging assignment, but again, it taught me what is required of a designer to produce a big event.”

What did you find most rewarding? “I believe that the whole course was rewarding. I can’t choose just one aspect of it over any other because everything was really well put together and each assignment built off the one before it. There was a great flow to the course that brought me through the design process from start to finish and each assignment was very informative. I also really enjoyed the videos and hearing about event design right from Mr. Bailey.”

Do you recommend his course, and LWPI, to others looking for such a program? “I would absolutely recommend this program and LWPI to other people who have an interest in event planning and design. Preston Bailey’s course is comprehensive, easy to understand, and challenging. The assignments reinforce the lessons very well and through them, students are encouraged to really take the information they are being given and use it in ways that will really prepare them to design their own events. LWPI also does a great job of connecting students and instructors via its online community. The student-center blog is very useful because it allows people to see what designs others have come up with and give/receive feedback about them. LWPI seems to take a lot of pride in educating event professionals, novices, and everyone in between who has an interest in the event industy.”

What about Preston’s work inspires you? “I love the fact that Mr. Bailey doesn’t see limits to what he can design and produce. His events are so grand in scale and so complex and beautiful in their details that it makes you stop and think, ‘Wow, anything is possible if you want it to be.’ It must be a great feeling to know that the only limits you have in your work are the ones you set for yourself. That gives you the inspiration to really dream and let your creative flow without boundaries.”

Who encouraged you to apply for this internship? “My mother, Aunt Jeannie, and husband, Jon, have been behind me for a long time trying to persuade me to pursue a career in the event industry. They have always believed that this is my calling. When I told them that this opportunity was available, they all said ‘You have to do this! Don’t let this experience get pass you by!’”

What are you most looking forward to learning? “The area that intrigues me most is floral design. Preston Bailey is famous for the gorgeous use of flowers, and I am very much looking forward to learning how he does what he does with them.”

What is your favorite part of event planning? “My favorite part of event planning is actually producing the event. I put a lot of time and energy into carefully choosing each design element I want to use, and I love to see how everything looks when they all come together. It’s in that culminating moment that all the hard work becomes worth it.”

How much event-planning experience do you have? “At this time I have no professional event-planning experience. Ever since I was little I have loved planning parties for friends and family, and over the years I have had many opportunities to do so. Even though it has never been a job for me I have always put a lot of energy and love into every event I’ve put together. Recently, I threw my mom a surprise 60th birthday party. There were definitely some sleepless nights spent over trying to come up with the best ideas for this event and in the end it was well worth it. She had a fabulous time and it meant a lot to her that I put so much effort into preparing an evening that was all about her.”

What inspires your designs? Architecture? Nature? Art? “I think that art and nature are my biggest inspirations. I live pretty close to Woodstock, N.Y.. which is a very artistic community. I love to shop for artwork there and I also go to a lot of craft fairs. I most enjoy contemporary art, and my favorite mediums are glass and metal. However, I also find a lot of inspiration in nature. I spent a lot of time by the ocean as a child so I love the water and believe that it can be incorporated beautifully into event design.”

You’re currently a dental assistant. Are you hoping/planning to change careers? Is wedding and event planning something you’ve always been interested in? “As much as I enjoy working in the dental field I am extremely eager to change careers and begin working in the event industry. Event planning is something that has always interested me, but it took me a long time to realize that I should pursue it as my career. I always viewed it as a fun hobby rather than a potential career. However, about a year and a half ago I was really at a stand-still with my college education. I didn’t know what direction I wanted my life to take and was getting very burnt out from taking classes in different majors that weren’t leading to a degree. For a long time my family had been telling me that event planning was my calling but I always just shrugged off their comments because I really didn’t think it would be possible to make a living doing something that I enjoyed so much. I always had the notion in my head that at least to some degree, work would be something that brought me a fair amount of discomfort. After all, that’s why it’s called ‘work,’ right? After doing some serious soul searching and talking to my family I realized that my life will be much better spent doing something I’m passionate about rather than drudging away through endless days at a job I don’t really love. That is when I started looking for event-planning courses and came across LWPI and Mr. Bailey’s course.”

How did you react when you found out you had been chosen to work so closely with Preston? “I was shocked! I had been actively following the Preston Bailey student center blog and looking at all the other students’ work so I knew how hard everyone had been working and how good their assignments were. I definitely didn’t expect to be the first person selected for the internship. There are so many talented people taking his course, and it is an indescribable honor for me to have this opportunity. This is like a dream for me. I love event planning, and if I am able to start a career in this industry I know that, in the least, my life will be better because I’ll be doing something that I love. The fact that Cho Phillips (Lovegevity’s CEO) and Mr. Bailey are helping me take the first steps toward realizing my dream means so much to me. I am very grateful for this opportunity!”

On The Go - LWPI Students Are Going Places

Mar 23, 2011 Wedding Planning Institute

In today’s fast pace of professional wedding planning it’s no wonder that successful professionals embrace technology as a way to stay on top of tasks, stay in touch with clients, and stay on the cutting edge of their industry.

We at LWPI know that certified wedding and event planners are the best of their kind when it comes to multitasking, organization, communication and project management. That is why our courses and online classes are developed with the “on the go” professional planner in mind. Students are using some of the most popular smartphones to run their businesses, track their personal and clients’ schedules, and even complete their professional and continuing-education requirements all from the palm of their hand.

Gone are the days of being chained to your computer to create a document, watch a learning tutorial or even Skype with your professor. LWPI students are continuing to push the power of technology to their advantage and accomplish more in a shorter period of time. At this time the iPhone and iPad are not included in this world of smartphones because they don’t support Flash, which isn’t going away, experts agree. But there are a number of other popular smartphones that LWPI students are using. A quick survey on Facebook and Twitter found that a number of you greatly depend on your Blackberrys and admit you’d be lost without them!

What is the most popular smartphone? According to the Nielsen Company, “Google’s Android is the most popular smartphone operating system in the United States - but just barely, according to new numbers. … (Nielsen) found that Android has captured 29 percent of the hearts and minds of U.S. smartphone users, while Research In Motion’s Blackberry and Apple’s iPhone trail at 27 percent each.”

Are you a current LWPI student? How are you using your smartphone to complete the course? Or are you a wedding-industry professional who depends on your smartphone to get you through the day?

In the Wedding Planner Classroom: Networking and Helping Others

Mar 4, 2011 Wedding Planning Institute

Lovegevity’s Wedding Planning Institute is devoted to helping its students learn the wedding and event-planning business. Our staff is with students every step of the way - from the classroom to the business world - and our instructors do their best to prepare our students to be successful after they complete their LWPI courses. Each instructor is encouraged to help their students plan an end-of-course celebration or charity event, and two such instructors recently took different directions, with great success. Amanda Allen of MMD Events in Tampa, and an LWPI instructor at St. Petersburg College in Florida, enjoys helping her students learn to network and meet with potential vendors.

Amanda says: For two semesters I’ve had my students throw an end-of-class “networking party.” I believe that networking is something to be studied and learned, and I talk about it a lot and we practice in class. Throughout the semester we take field trips and have speakers come in. All the professionals are sent an invitation, and the class plans a party at my home to network with all the professionals they have met. In this way the students have a deeper connection with these professionals, and over the two semesters I have taught it has led to students getting internships and jobs, getting great advice, and allowed them to practice networking.

My last fall class really knocked it out of the park - many of them met before class to work on the elements of what they would contribute - we all had a lot of fun! What resulted was a networking event with 12 students and 15 professionals. Students supplied homemade savory and sweet foods and created a lovely buffet layout complete with food signs. There were fall decorations and paper products, as well as a lovely decorated drinks table. The students asked one of our guest speakers, Rommy Lieber of Cakes with a Kick, to create a special cake for us - it was beautiful. And Michael Zoumberos of Limelight Photography, also a guest speaker, took photos for us. The party was set up, torn down, and conducted during normal class hours the last day of class. Students even collaborated to make favors!

During class we constantly practiced how to approach someone you want to network with and introduce yourself. The students set goals of who they wanted to talk to during the networking party and two students gained internships that night.

Anna Pohl, an LWPI instructor at State College of Florida, took her students to Holidays at the Crosley, Festival of Trees, which is a charity event. The students volunteered at the event, Pohl says, and they toured the grounds. This helped her students make contacts at Crosley, which will be great in the future as it’s a popular spot for weddings.

Are you interested in becoming a certified wedding and event planner? Would you like to learn how to network and build your base of professional contacts? Tours of LWPI’s certified wedding and event planning courses are available online, and you can register today for a class in your area by checking for local schools on our calendar.

Real Weddings from LWPI Graduates: Jen Taylor

Jan 24, 2011 Wedding Planning Institute

This month’s spotlight for Real Weddings from LWPI Graduates comes from Jen Taylor, the owner of Taylor’d Events by Jennifer in Woodinville, Wash. She won a 2010 Wedding Wire Bride Choice Award and was named Best Day of Wedding Coordinator in 2010 by Seattle Bride Magazine. Taylor is also an instructor with LWPI at Everett Community College.

Taylor says, “I started working with this couple in November 2009 for their August 8, 2010, wedding. This couple was fun and I loved working with them, but they were also challenging to me as a planner. Working with them really helped me learn how to help a couple throughout the process of planning their wedding. They were both in jobs that were very analytical and that is how they went about planning their wedding; both of them knew what they did not want in their wedding, but they could not express what they wanted. That is where it helped that I have a great team of vendors to surround my clients and help create their vision.”

For example, Taylor explains, “The florist wanted to give the couple several ideas, but I wanted to compare apples with apples so I tried to keep the options about the same. When the bride received quotes for the flowers she was very concerned that the quote did not include how many of each flower would be in the arrangements. It was my job as the planner to let the couple know that the florist would make the arrangements match what they had in mind. At one point the bride created a Powerpoint presentation of flowers that she liked and did not like, which was helpful. It was also helpful that the florist agreed to do a mock-up arrangement, which helped give the bride pretty good idea of what the bouquet and centerpiece would look like.”

We absolutely love the color scheme that this bride chose and Taylor executed. Purple can be a hard color to work with if it’s overused, but in this case we think Taylor did a great job of incorporating different hues and even heading in the blue direction, as the cake shows. We see some great lighting in the background, which continued the theme. We also see some great, personal touches, such as the pats of butter shaped into flowers, and the napkins standing on end at each plate. The napkins especially were a great way to add visual interest to the tables and reception overall. And by the smile on the bride’s face we’d say she agreed!

Are you interested in becoming a certified wedding and event planner trained by Taylor? Be sure to register for her class, which begins February 1. And to learn even more about Jennifer check her out on Facebook and Twitter or visit her website. (And by the way: A Preston Bailey Signature Wedding Design course is also available at Everett, with a different instructor. Check out more about the class, which starts Feb. 3, and register today.)

Here is some more information on the vendors Taylor worked with to create this gorgeous wedding:

* Elements in Bloom
* Sean Hoyt Photography

In the Wedding Planner Classroom: Cowley College, Kansas

Jan 14, 2011 Wedding Planning Institute

If you’re reading this blog, or taking a certified wedding- and event-planner class through LWPI, we automatically know one thing about you: You love weddings. But there is a lot more to this business than weddings, and that’s one thing that LWPI instructors try to impress upon their students. You can really help your business grow by focusing on other events, and by getting out in your community. Ronni Johnston, an LWPI instructor at Cowley College, recently helped some of her students put on a fall festival for kids in their area.

“My class put on the “Kid at Heart” Fall Fun Fest to benefit the Child Advocacy Center in Wichita, Kansas. This included cake walk, kid games like fishing and pumpkin bowling, a coloring contest, story reading activities, face painting and concessions,” Johnston said.

“The students put a great deal of effort into the event. They got ample opportunities to both show off their skill and expand their knowledge base,” Johnston said. “One student, Jennifer Tippin, took on the role of project leader and did an admirable job at keeping to team together. Every student would be awarded an “A+” in my opinion based on effort, enthusiasm and increased education.”

Do you live in the Wichita area and want to become a certified wedding- and event planner? Sign up for Ronni’s class today! Want to read about some more end-of-course events? Check out this post from another LWPI class.
