Student Spotlight – Kate Clayton
Kate Clayton is a graduate and Certified Wedding and Event Planner. Ms. Clayton presented project one with a rose and navy color palette design for Chase Jones & Katie Knight’s wedding.
Kate’s project one (1) was to design an event and bring her “A Game” to the design and event experience. We enjoyed her project and we think you’ll enjoy it too!
What was the inspiration for this project?
I have a friend who is getting married in October. I asked her the basic questions that I would ask for a bridal inquiry, and then I attempted to develop design ideas to meet her vision. My goal was to visually present the wedding as well as develop the logistics for it.
What did you find to be the most challenging?
Deciding how to organize the massive amount of details that go into a wedding design was by far the most challenging obstacle. You want to make sure you are presenting the details in a manner that is visually pleasing but also covers the logistical details such as timelines, vendors, etc.
What was your favorite part?
I enjoy the visual design aspect of a wedding more than anything. I love to look for new ideas on Pinterest and find creative ideas that meet the style of the client’s wedding.
What was the biggest take-away you learned?
I felt this project allowed me to develop a method for presenting information to clients. When a client comes to you, you can tell them design ideas and present all of the logistical work you will do. However, I do not believe showing all of these design aspects as separate pieces is as effective as showing clients a website with all of the ideas organized and visually represented.
What advice do you have for anyone planning to start a career in wedding and event planning?
Find a format for presenting your ideas to clients. It may be in the form of a website, a portfolio, or even Powerpoint.
Whatever it may be, be ready to visually show your client how you will design the wedding.
