We had a chance to catch up with busy student, Kathryn Maloney, on her way to becoming a Certified Wedding and Event Planner. Ms. Maloney is a student in both Wedding and Event Planning and Signature Wedding and Event Design.

Kathryn recently finished an internship in Los Angeles at the Charity Gala for Lisa Vanderpump’s Dog Foundation. Kat shined with her talents for teamwork, design skills, and superpowers, all while being challenged with a variety of tasks and circumstances.

Kathryn’s project one (1) was to design an event and bring her “A Game” to the design and event experience. We enjoyed her project and we think you’ll enjoy it too!

What 3 things would you like to share about yourself?

1. Dessert, coffee & cocktails are a huge inspiration to me. A simple cup of coffee can become an opportunity to create boundless works of art. Ombre drinks, floral infusions, sprinkles of gold-leaf– these creative choices are inspiring.

2. Very sensory driven – flowers, tea & perfume at some of my favorite things.

3. I enjoy being thrown into the unknown & thriving.

Why did you enroll in the Certified Wedding and Event Planning and Design Programs?

I knew it was time for my passion to align with my reality. My creative energy was not able to be fully unleashed in my 9-5. My passion for creating carefully crafted experiences & design led me to explore both event planning & event design.

What was the inspiration for this project?

Rose-gold is my “spirit color”. Sometimes a color evokes such a strong attraction that it becomes entwined with everyday life choices. Rose-gold has been a strong presence in my wardrobe & décor. I wanted to translate this into a design that was undeniably romantic & regal.

What did you find to be the most challenging?

Taming my desire create, create, create. It’s important to hone in on the most powerful design ideas and execute them with full passion. At times, I found myself translating one image into multiple design concepts. It is imperative that clients be presented with various options, however, some ideas just need to be saved for later. Timelines are important!

What was your favorite part?

Drawing inspiration from Preston’s image board and translating into an immersive story telling experience.

It’s incredible how an image can conjure so many different design possibilities.

What was the biggest take-away you learned?

Inspiration can be drawn from infinite sources & is in the eye of the beholder. A rock is just a rock to some.

To another, it glistens in the sun & shines with multi-faceted color – perhaps the inspiration for a event color story.

What advice do you have for anyone planning to start a career in wedding and event planning?

Embrace the client’s individuality and use your expertise to turn what may seem impossible, possible.

You are the key to unlocking the dreams in your client’s head!
