We had a chance to catch up with busy student, Mireia Mauri, on her way to becoming a Certified Wedding and Event Planner. Ms. Mauri is a student in Wedding and Event Planning.

Mireia’s project one (1) was to design an event and bring her “A Game” to the design and event experience. We enjoyed her project and we think you’ll enjoy it too!

What 3 things would you like to share about yourself?

1. Creative: I love to unleash my imagination and bring ideas into reality. This helps me as well to find original solutions to complex problems.

2. Open and communicative: I like talking with people, exchanging ideas and experiences, travelling and learning about other cultures. I am an expat since 2011 and I speak 5 languages (Catalan, Spanish, English, German and Italian).

3. Nature-lover: I enjoy outdoor activities – especially in the countryside, discovering new landscapes and observing wildlife. I am a passionate advocate for animal welfare and I absolutely love dogs!

Why did you enroll in the Certified Wedding and Event Planning and Design Programs?

I have always loved the world of events, and for years I was involved in the organization of all kind of social events. But it was when I was planning my own wedding in 2016 that I realized how passionate I was about this!

I have a background in Hotel Management, Tourism and Conference Organization; and 10+ years work experience in the hospitality, executive assistance and marketing sectors.

A couple of months ago, I moved to San Francisco from Europe. I knew that was the time to make a further step forward, and I saw earning an official Wedding & Event Planning Certification as a route to helping me get started in the high-level event planning industry in the United States.

What was the inspiration for this project?

In this project, “OlgaAmandaBarcelona” I am featuring my best friend’s wedding. The name of the event refers not only to their names and the city where they will celebrate, but intends to be as well a nod to their professions (both are in the Cinematographic Industry).

Olga is from Barcelona, but lives in New York since 2009. She found there the love of her live, Amanda, and last year they decided to tie the knot. The official wedding is taking place in the New York City Hall, just with their most intimate circle, and afterwards they want to throw a big party to celebrate their joy with all of their friends and family in Barcelona, Olga’s hometown.

Nothing could be more inspiring than the extraordinary people they are, the love they profess to each other, and the beautiful city of Barcelona!

What did you find to be the most challenging?

The most difficult part for me was to create the vendors list, as I had no references yet and had to do it all from scratch.

What was your favorite part?

I had so much fun collecting pictures and creating the mood boards. As long as I was completing each board, I could better picture my event, and this was very satisfying! At the end I could even feel the Mediterranean breeze and the scent of the deep blue sea!

What was the biggest take-away you learned?

This was the first time I planned an event using the A6/A8 Formula, and I have to say it has been a great discovery! It really helped me keep my ideas organized and picture how the event would look like. Completing this project was very rewarding, I felt much better prepared and ready for the real action!

What advice do you have for anyone planning to start a career in wedding and event planning?

1. Listen to your client and make as many notes as you can. If you really want to accomplish their wishes, you need to understand them.

2. Stay organized. Every person has his or her own techniques for that, what it really works for me is making lists. That way I do not forget anything and I can focus my mind. There are many different topics you have to address when planning an event, and you do not want to miss any details!

3. Use the right tools. This is also very important. Excel can be very useful to create many tabs for different topics (timeline, musical score, vendors, budget….) in a single document. Having good templates is also very useful.

4. Methodology. For me, the A6/A8 Formula has been very effective to develop the project. I highly recommend it to anyone planning an event.

5. Reliable vendors. There are so many things you need to have under control during an event. You need to make sure your vendors will deliver best quality service and perform as expected, in order to minimize risks.
